Safety is not only critical in handling firearms but in everyday life. The NRA offers resources and training to ensure the safe and effective use of firearms as well as personal safety. Training courses are available that teach proactive strategies to avoid dangerous situations, self-defense using a firearm, as well as protection inside and outside the home. Don't forget the NRA Gun Safety Rules below:
ALWAYS Keep The Gun Pointed In A Safe DirectionThis is the primary rule of gun safety. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.
|
ALWAYS Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Ready To ShootWhen holding a gun, rest your finger alongside the frame and outside the trigger guard. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger. |
ALWAYS Keep The Gun Unloaded Until Ready To UseIf you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

A safety walk-through must be completed and the rules list must be signed before range privileges begin. Please contact a Range Safety Officer to arrange your walk-through.
- Ear and eye protection are required.
- The use of drugs or alcohol before or during shooting is strictly prohibited. Alcoholic beverages or drugs are not permitted on the ranges at any time.
- Shooters must conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times and are responsible for the conduct of their guests, including reviewing these rules with them. Guests are welcome; however, after their second visit to the range, they must become members.
- All shooters are responsible for their own firearms, equipment, and ammunition.
- Firearms must be brought onto the range in a box, case, or holster.
- All shooting must be done from a common firing line, from benches, or alongside benches. (Common firing lines are identified on each range.)
- Firearms on the range must remain unloaded until everyone is on the firing line and ready to shoot.
- Never handle a firearm on the firing line while others are downrange.
- Firearms on benches must be unloaded, with actions open and muzzles pointed downrange.
- No rapid or unaimed fire is permitted.
- You are responsible for issuing a cease-fire command if you believe an unsafe condition exists or a safety infraction has occurred. All shooters must immediately stop firing and unload their firearms until the unsafe condition is corrected.
- You must follow all instructions from the Chief Range Safety Officer (CRSO) or Range Safety Officer (RSO) when they are present on the range.
- Targets must be paper products attached to the webbing (orange snow fence) downrange. Personal stands may be used but must not exceed 4 feet in height and must have the backstop directly behind the target. All rounds fired must impact the dirt berm directly behind the target.
- Cross-target shooting is strictly prohibited.
- Targets placed on wood support frames must be specifically designed for that type of framework (e.g., spinning or resetting steel targets), not paper targets. Steel targets must have an earth berm directly behind them when placed.
- Your membership card and safety checklist must be in your possession while shooting. Upon completion of the safety walkthrough, the RSO will provide members with a signed copy of the Range Rules and Firearm Checklist.
Clubhouse Firearm Rules
- Only unloaded firearms are permitted in the clubhouse. This does not apply to concealed handguns carried by individuals who hold a valid license. Concealed firearms must remain concealed at all times. If a concealed firearm needs to be handled, it must first be unloaded outside of the clubhouse and then taken to the designated "safe gun area."
- Firearms must be transported in a case, holster, or bag.
- Firearms may only be handled in the designated "safe gun area."
- No ammunition is permitted in the "safe gun area."
- These rules may be adjusted for activities conducted by a certified instructor.

- THE RANGES ARE CLOSED WHEN THE FARMER IS WORKING IN THE FIELD.
- Be aware that there is a house in the woods behind the range.
- Firearms must have the action open and/or a chamber flag in place when not on the firing line.

- The use of clay targets with a hand trap is allowed behind backstops.
